The 2012-13 season in Gozo came to a close on Sunday with the Super Cup match between league champions Nadur Youngsters and GFA Cup winners Kerċem Ajax.

Nadur made amends for their recent upset to Kerċem in the GFA Cup final after beating them 2-0 at the Gozo Stadium to secure their fourth honour this season.

Once again the two sides produced a tight encounter with the final outcome in the balance for long periods.

Play during the first half took place mainly in midfield where Nadur enjoyed a slight edge but Kerċem were rarely threatened and hit back with counter-breaks.

On 29 minutes, a shot by Claudio Antunes, who was making a return to the Nadur starting line-up after a three-match suspension, was stopped by keeper Courtney Mercieca. Joseph Portelli pounced on the rebound and poked the ball into the net but the ‘goal’ was disallowed for offside.

Kerċem replied with a menacing Stoyko Sakaliev drive that ended inches wide.

The Youngsters opened the scoring five minutes after the restart through a Milos Stojanovic header following a cross by Antunes. The latter had paid dearly for his three-match ban as he was pipped to the top scorer’s award by Xewkija’s Dene Shields.

Kerċem tried to stage a reaction but Nadur’s rearguard was steady and their goalkeeper was rarely called to make difficult interventions.

Seven minutes from time, Mercieca denied Nadur with a difficult save from Antunes’s header but Nadur made sure of victory soon after thanks to a Stojanovic goal. He concluded a fine move initiated by Charles Hili and Antunes.

After the match, GFA president Alvin Grech and general secretary Joe Bajada presented medals and trophies to Nadur captain Anthony Portelli and Joseph Portelli, the vice-captain.

The match referee was Philip Farrugia.
