A group of NGOs has welcomed the announcement that enforcement in outside development zones is to be increased but said this has to be backed by environment-protection policies.

Parliamentary secretary Michael Farrugia made the announcement in an interview with The Sunday Times of Malta.

However, the NGOs said “what will make or break Malta’s environment” were the new policies under consultation, on high rise buildings and ODZ areas.

“It might well be the case that no enforcement will have to take place because the abuses in the past years will now be considered legal,” they said.

The group is waiting for a police permit to go ahead with their protest called off last Saturday due to the rain.
