Music is one of the arts which unifies people from various backgrounds. It is, perhaps, one of the greatest artistic and influential stimulants with a universal language and appeal which transcend social and political borders and limits.

For this reason, the Office of the President, in collaboration with the Parliamentary Secretariat of Culture and Local Councils, are organising a week-long series of performances featuring some of Malta’s top musicians as well as some internationally-renowned names. The aim is to make these a regular feature in the cultural calendar, a legacy one hopes will be pursued by President George Abela’s successors.

The programme includes a master class by world-famous British pianist John Lill; he will perform three popular sonatas by Beethoven at San Anton Palace. Highlights also include a soprano and piano evening recital at San Anton Palace, as well as a jazz and vocal recital evening concert at Verdala Palace.

Internationally-acclaimed Nash Ensemble will perform at the opening concert at Verdala Palace, with works including Schubert’s popular Trout Piano Quintet. The concert will be preceded by a talk by Prof. Peter Vassallo on Romanticism: the Resonance of Silence.

This year’s events conclude with a Family Day, with several activities for children and a concert at Verdala Palace. In the evening, pianist Charlene Farrugia will perform works by Chopin and Schumann at San Anton Palace. Other performers are sopranos Miriam Cauchi, Gillian Zammit and Lydia Caruana; mezzo-soprano Clare Ghigo; pianists Joanne Camilleri, Maria Frendo, Ian Brown,Yvette Galea and Nicholas Vella-Laurenti; violinist Nadia Debono; cellists Simon Abdilla Joslin and Adrian Brendel; double-bass player Gjorgji Cincievski; flautist Rebecca Hall and harpist Britt Arend; jazz musicians Charles City Gatt and Joe Debono; Dominic Galea Trio and jazz singer Deborah Harrison.

The concerts will take place between November 4 and 10. Entrance to all events is free of charge but seating allocation will be by invitation, and on a first-come, first-served basis. For details, call on 2559 5563/4.
