The next music appreciation evening of the German-Maltese Circle Classical Music Group will be devoted to the legendary German conductor and composer Wilhelm Furtwängler (1885-1954).

Although Furtwängler became world-famous for his unique conducting style, he always considered himself first and foremost as a composer. His masterpiece and spiritual testament is his monumental 80-minute four-movement Symphony No. 2, which he composed between 1944 and 1945 very much in the Brucknerian late Romantic style.

This highly interesting presentation in English on Furtwängler’s life and his grand symphonic work, including extended playback extracts from Furtwängler’s Love documentary video and from Symphony No. 2 audio recording by Daniel Barenboim with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, will be delivered by Martin Spiteri.

The event will be held on Wednesday at Messina Palace, 141 St Christopher Street, Valletta, at 6.30pm. The public is invited and entrance is free.
