Prime Minister Joseph Muscat yesterday harshly criticised the Opposition, saying it had absolutely no message for the future of Malta.

Addressing another political activity in Marsascala, Dr Muscat said that, while the Opposition was only in criticism mode, saying that he was doing everything wrong, the government was working hard and achieving results to make Malta the best in Europe.

Criticising the Opposition for making fun of the reduction of two cents in the price of petrol, he said this only showed it was aloof from the real needs of the electorate.

He said Labour’s plan was to put more money in people’s pockets as part of its strategy to boost the economy. Other examples were the reduction in water and electricity tariffs, refunds of VAT paid on new cars and the introduction of free childcare.

Dr Muscat described the recent introduction of the civil unions law by his government as a “social revolution” aimed at putting Malta at the forefront of the EU.

On equality between the sexes Dr Muscat said that the country was completely dormant during the last 20 years and it had to be a Labour government to start introducing measures aimed at boosting the presence of women in decision-making positions.

He said that the appointment of Marie- Louise Coleiro Preca as President of Malta should serve as a big inspiration to young women who could now see that a woman can reach the top echelons of society.

The activity was also addressed by former prime minister Alfred Sant, who said it wasimportant that the country continued to create more jobs. He said that Europe had a big problem in this area but the Maltese government was moving in the right direction to give positive signals to the economy.
