I found Astrid Vella’s article ‘Are we Europe’s beggars?’(August 4) excellent and almost completely to the point. As someone who had his working life in architecture and surveying, I would, however, be far from sure that the Mrieħel development is the awful monstrosity that seems to be being suggested by so many.

If properly designed and fully integrated into that area, which, I confess, given the apparent current ‘rules’ seems most unlikely, this development could add a boost to Mrieħel and be an exciting visual compliment to the wonderful view of Valletta from Mdina and vice-versa.

I so hope proper studies are completed, showing everything from the true visual impact to the real effect on the area from every relevant point of view and that, should the developers get the go ahead they will be required to, first, dramatically improve all access roads to the development within Mrieħel and to design their buildings in such a way as to minimise the disruption to the area during building works.

I envisage that tower cranes using some of the lift shafts for the duration of building works could dramatically reduce the traffic flow problems that plague our construction sites with ‘cherry pickers’ and the like.
