It is no secret that the majority of our broadcasters are run-of-the-mill but for a newscaster not to know how to pronounce (Bank of Valletta chairman Roderick) ‘Chalmers’ is a bit too much. Many of them nowadays have graduated in Communications or whatever, but even if they have just an O-level in English they ought to know that ‘ch’ in Chalmers is like ‘ch’ in church, not like the ‘c’ in calm.
If they don’t know it from their much limited English, I am sure that the Net TV newscasters should have heard it on various other radio and TV stations locally at least. After all, Mr Chalmers is not a name unknown to us; he is in the news quite regularly.
Our level of broadcasting is more than shameful and an insult to our society. Maybe it was wise of the minister to abolish the licence fee; why should we pay to be insulted?
