The government will issue a call for expressions of interest to set up a motorsport track, fulfilling an electoral pledge.
For years the Malta Motorsport Federation has insisted on developing a motorsport facility claiming it would help the sport grow, reduce road accidents, reduce the costs incurred by enthusiasts to practise their sport in a safe environment and accommodate local and international motorsport events.
A facility would also be a major contributor to the sport tourism niche market, it said.
The project has been long in coming. In February 2013, before the general election, then prime minister Lawrence Gonzi said that a plot of public land near the airport was being “seriously considered” as a motorsport and road safety facility.
