A man who stopped his car in the middle of the road to drop off his brother and nephew in front of the Prime Minister’s Office ended up in hot water when he assaulted an officer who reprimanded him.

The court heard how Joseph Mckay, 58, of Valletta, had a scuffle with a policeman at about 9.30 a.m. on Wednesday outside Castille, in Valletta. Mr Mckay was approached by PC Brenton Gilford who told him to pull over to the side, adding he had held up the traffic by stopping there. Mr Mckay replied he could not believe how stopping for a minute could cause a traffic jam and the officer warned him to watch his words.

The officer then asked him to hand over his identity card which Mr Mckay did. He also got out of the car and started raising his voice, telling the policeman to speed it up and give him his ID card back because he had to take his mother to hospital.

A scuffle ensued in which Mr McKay hit the officer in the face, injuring him slightly, before he went back into the car and drove off.

Magistrate Antonio Mizzi conditionally discharged him for three years.

Lawyers Chris Cardona and Mark Vassallo appeared for Mr Mckay.
