The item Green Fingers, Red-Handed reminded me of the five peach-coloured flowering azaleas the garden centre had planted in my front garden on the Friday before Mother’s Day years ago.
On Sunday morning, I had a near heart attack when the gorgeous bushes were gone; actually they had been ‘lifted’.
Years later, when my five lilac saplings had grown into flowering trees (Wedgewood blue, white, pale coral, a double pink and true lilac) someone came, again on Sunday Mother’s Day, to ‘prune’ them!
One year, my doorbell rang early on Mother’s Day and a woman asked if she could have some lilacs for her church altar. It so happened I had a large bouquet on my patio table and, with a smile, handed her the vase saying: these are for God. In the afternoon, there was the empty vase on the table next to a paper plate with homemade cookies!
