Mosta retained their lead at the top of the Women’s BOV League following a 3-0 win over Pembroke Athleta at the Charles Abela Stadium earlier this week.

In other matches involving teams aspiring for the title, Birkir-kara beat Tarxien Rainbows 4-1 despite having a player sent off while third-placed Hibernians lowered Gozo FC’s colours in a 2-0 win at the Sannat ground.

Mosta have 29 points from 11 matches, two ahead of Birkirkara who lead Hibernians by one point. The Stripes, however, have played one match more than the two other contenders.

Dorianne Theuma shot Mosta into the lead after 14 minutes and despite Pembroke showing progress in their game, the Blues went in for the break enjoying a 2-0 lead following a Rachel Nolan goal four minutes from half-time.

After the interval, Pembroke played a solid match in defence and rarely gave Mosta a sniff at their goal.

Near the end, however, Nicole Buttigieg found space to beat goalkeeper RoseMarie Baldacchino to round up the score for Mosta.

Tarxien produced unexpectedly stiff resistance to Birkirkara and at one point the bottom-placed team were also entertaining hopes of a shock result only for the Stripes to make their experience count in unfavourable situations.

Maryrose Cardona and Raina Giusti gave Birkirkara a 2-0 lead. But the Stripes ended up playing with a player less 20 minutes from time when Alishia Sultana was red-carded for a foul.

Tarxien soon pulled one back through Francesca Cauchi but Birkirkara made sure of avoiding an embarrassing situation with two quick goals by Stephania Farrugia and Giusti to dash the Rainbows’ hopes.

Hibs scored one in each half against Gozo but were rather profligate in front of goal and a series of missed chances could have cost them dear in the end.

Dionne Tonna opened the score after 28 minutes and Ylenia Carabott made it 2-0 midway through the second half.

Melania Bajada’s Gozo played a positive match but their efforts were still not enough to deny the Paolites.
