In his article ‘In search of a mosque’ (August1), Joe Cordina painted a rosy picture of our relations with Libya until the oil drilling dispute emerged. That’s as far as Libyan friendship goes.

Dom Mintoff was over-generous in his dealings with Muammar Gaddafi and he also went too far in  his relationship with Libya, especially when he introduced lessons in Arabic in schools here. The idea didn’t last long as only a handful of students chose the subject.

Cordina did not mention anything on the way Sunnis view Shiites. In Malta, the majority of Muslims are Sunni, so it does not take an expert to realise the outcome once they engage each other over another mosque.

The authorities would do well to heed the plea made by that Muslim gentleman who took part in the TV chat show Skjetti last February when he warned that another mosque in Malta spells trouble.
