The number of operations carried out at Mater Dei Hospital in the first three months of this year has gone up by 2,202 over the same quarter in 2007, totalling 10,761.

The state hospital registered an extra 674 operations in January, 716 in February and 812 in March over the first three months in 2007.

The figures, released on Monday, were compared to 2007 because that was the last year the health service operated from St Luke’s Hospital. Elective operations recorded an 84 per cent rise, of which 1,068 were ophthalmic and 1,033 were orthopaedic.

Mondays accounted for the highest number of procedures (23 per cent) and Sundays the lowest (three per cent). Health Minister Joe Cassar expressed his satisfaction at the increase and thanked the staff at Mater Dei Hospital for their work.
