A socio-linguistic seminar tackling multilingualism entitled ‘Language: More is definitely better’ – hosted by the Association of Linguistics and Language Technology – is being held tomorrow in Floriana.

Whether it’s the ‘Maltese for Malta’ front or the ‘Speak English, Maltese is useless’ barricade,  the concept behind the seminar is that many keep missing the point that more is definitely better in language learning.

The seminar will look into a number of studies and research papers that illustrate that we use more than one language to co-construct identities and enrich our linguistic lives. Sarah Grech, a linguist with research interests in language variation, English language proficiency and sociophonetics – who is currently involved in a number of projects to gather data reflecting diverse aspects of spoken English and Maltese and lectures on English proficiency and linguistics at the University of Malta – will conduct the seminar.

The seminar is being held tomorrow at the National Students Council premises at 50, Lion Street, Floriana, from 7 to 9pm. Entrance is free.
