Dogs are being abandoned by owners who are seeking to avoid the cost of microchipping ahead of the law that comes into force next week, with animal charities stepping in to offer the service for free.

Last week, the SPCA took in seven dogs without microchips, which were being rehabilitated before looking for a new home.

Dogs Trust and SPCA have joined forces to help owners by offering free microchipping for dogs whose owners are on benefits, farmers, hunters and factory dog carers until June 30.

“We would urge people never to dump a dog in desperation. We hope this generous offer will help dog owners,” SPCA manager Miriam Casha said.
