January was windier and drier than normal, with the second highest wind speed registered since 1990.

The average wind speed measured was 11.3 knots, higher than the monthly average of 10.2 knots, the Met Office said.

The strongest wind gust was 50 knots from the west, northwest on January 18.

Seven strong wind warnings and two gale warnings were broadcast to the civil and marine authorities and the public.

A total of 50.2 mm of rain fell, which is lower than the January norm of 89mm. The wettest day was January 25 with a total of 11.2mm. The highest January rainfall on record was in 2009 with a total of 248.2 mm while the driest was in 1983 with just 8.5 mm.

With a mean temperature of 13.3°C, last month was warmer than the climate norm of 12.4°C.

The highest temperature recorded was 18.1°C on January 20 and the lowest was 6.7°C on January 18.
