A few weeks ago it was announced that fines for using a mobile phone while driving are set to increase from €50 to €100. This will really get us nowhere. A fine of €1,000 plus the suspension of a driving licence would be a more effective deterrent.

The introduction of such fines will be meaningless if effective enforcement is not stepped up. The prevalence of this extremely dangerous practice among car drivers in Malta needs to be dealt with firmly once and for all.

Surely people can wait a few minutes to take a call or, alternatively, if they really need to take calls while driving, they can make use of a variety of gadgets now available which allow one to drive safely while answering calls.
