Labour MP Joe Mizzi yesterday accused Finance Minister Tonio Fenech of failing to take action against an Enemalta engineer in the gas division after a board of inquiry found that the engineer made financial gain through direct orders given to a private company where he was employed on a part time basis.

Speaking during the debate in second reading of the Collective Proceedings Bill, Mr Mizzi said the inquiry report recommended that action be taken against the engineer. The minister knew of the contents of the report last December but up to date did not take action.

Mr Mizzi called on Minister Fenech to table the inquiry report in the House by today Tuesday so that consumers would know who were the people in Enemalta taking wrong and irresponsible decisions. Such decisions led to squandering of millions of euros contributing to hefty increases in utility bills.

Mr Mizzi said that the time would come when he would reveal abuses in the purchase of fuels by Enemalta.

He also mentioned another case where half a million Maltese liri had been squandered in a case involving gas cylinders. There were a few who made profits with expenses reflected in utility bills. There were inquiries like the Mercaptan case which showed that disastrous way in which the gas section at Enemalta had been led. Certain people enjoyed the protection of higher authorities, he said.
