The new, state-of-the-art Ġgantija Visitors’ Centre is a most fitting tribute to the builders of the temple some 5,600 years ago. Through the walk along the exhibits one understands better the life and times of the temple builders and marvels at the eloquent intelligence of the people of Gozo at that time.

The whole complex also proves without a shadow of doubt how deeply rooted is the religiosity of this island.

However, one of the huge boards on display ruins the centre and hurts those who love the Maltese language and the place names of Gozo.

It is truly unbelievable that Heritage Malta, which commissioned the boards (paying thousands of euros), should allow such a glaring mistake to be made. I am referring to a huge board with six Gozo place names. Of these, two are written wrongly. It is not Kerċem but Ta’ Kerċem. Worse, it is not Is-Sannat but Ta’ Sannat.

A friend of mine told me that he had already pointed out these mistakes to Heritage Malta but, almost a month after the opening of the centre, the mistakes are still there.

It is understood that these mistakes were not committed by Gozitans but by someone of our compatriots from the larger island who are not so keen to use correct and polished vernacular.

Now is high time to make the necessary corrections. Why wait for the tourism high season?
