An investigation has been ordered after a patient’s biopsy went missing at Mater Dei Hospital, the Health Ministry said last night.

The ministry, which directed the hospital’s CEO to open an inquiry, said it was taking the matter very seriously to ensure accountability and transparency in the patients’ interest.

Sources who spoke to The Sunday Times said the incident had happened over a week ago when the biopsy got misplaced on its way to the lab when it exchanged hands between the nursing officer and the care worker.

The patient was informed and the error explained. The biopsy will be taken again. Action was immediately taken to ensure safeguards are in place to prevent this from happening again.

The last time a biopsy went missing was at St Luke’s Hospital, the sources said.
