Stars such as Stephen Fry, Lord Julian Fellowes and Miranda Hart stepped out for a theatre night as Miss Saigon returns to London’s West End after 15 years.
Actor Eddie Redmayne, actress Samantha Barks and director Tom Hooper, who worked on the film adaptation of Les Misérables, also joined producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh, the theatre impresario behind successes like Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera and Mary Poppins, at the press night of Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil’s musical.
“I am so excited about tonight. I’ve never actually seen Miss Saigon but I loved the music my whole life. I’ve been waiting to see it on stage and I can’t wait to see the cast and the show, which is amazing,” said Barks.
Hart added: “I love musicals and I particularly love this because it has everything – it’s dramatic with songs I might end up humming along to.”
The revived production, set during the Vietnam War and featuring a new cast, has moved to the Prince Edward Theatre in Soho from its original home at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane. It ran for 10 years for over 4,000 performances before closing in October 1999. The production then transferred to Broadway in New York before touring around the world.
