The health condition of former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff, who was admitted to hospital on Saturday suffering from a severe chest infection and heart problems, “is slowly improving”, his daughter said yesterday.

Mr Mintoff was still undergoing tests and receiving antibiotics intravenously to treat his condition but Yana Mintoff Bland remained hopeful he would continue to improve.
“We have heard nothing to the contrary,” she said, pointing out that her 95-year-old father was feeling tired yesterday.
The medical team at Mater Dei Hospital responsible for his care described his condition on Saturday as “critical”.
But it seems Mr Mintoff will pull through.
He was last admitted to hospital in Gozo, suffering from pneumonia, in October but was back home that same week.
Over the past two years, Mr Mintoff has been in and out of hospital, diagnosed with numerous conditions common among the elderly. The former Labour leader served as Prime Minister twice between 1956 and 1958 and again from 1971 to 1984.
