Former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff was discharged from Mater Dei Hospital yesterday after spending nine days at the intensive care unit suffering from a severe chest infection and congestive heart failure.

He responded well to treatment and his medical condition has improved, according to the medical authorities. Over the past two years, Mr Mintoff has been in and out of hospital, diagnosed with numerous conditions common among the elderly.

The former Labour leader served as Prime Minister twice between 1956 and 1958 and again from 1971 to 1984.
