Transport Minister Joe Mizzi will be meeting the Żebbuġ local councillors to discuss any infrastructural concerns such as those recently raised about Mdina Road.

This will be among a string of meetings planned between the minister and all local councils to discuss “coordination of major infrastructural projects, road building, maintenance and landscaping”, a spokeswoman for the Transport Ministry said.

The Times last week reported Żebbuġ mayor Alfred Grixti saying the council believes more traffic lights should be installed along Mdina Road where two serious accidents have recently taken place.

On March 24, a 34-year-old man was seriously injured when he was involved in a collision with another car. The accident happened just two days after an 83-year-old man died when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into an electricity pole along the same road.

Mr Grixti said that being an arterial road, Mdina Road fell under the responsibility of Transport Malta. He believes the road was badly planned since there is an area where two lanes suddenly bottleneck into one.

Apart from that, he said, more traffic lights are needed to calm traffic down. The local council proposed three sets of lights: at the Siġġiewi roundabout, at the roundabout just outside Żebbuġ and at the one near St Dorothy’s School.

When asked about this, a Transport Ministry spokeswoman said: “Minister Joe Mizzi will be launching a consultation process with the local councils regarding infrastructural issues.”

After the Easter recess, Mr Mizzi will be meeting mayors and local councillors to discuss their concerns on the coordination of major infrastructural projects, road building, maintenance and landscaping.

“This process will help the ministry to be in a better position to identify what needs to be done in each locality,” the spokeswoman said.
