Home Affairs Minister Manuel Mallia yesterday blamed “a misunderstanding” for his failure to include his income for 2012 in the ministerial declaration of assets.

Dr Mallia said he earned €137,325 last year, adding that he asked for the parliamentary records to be changed to reflect this income.

“There was a misunderstanding because I was told that I did not have to include my income for 2012 because I was not an MP then,” Dr Mallia said.

He was one of several MPs who failed to declare their income when the declaration of assets by Cabinet members was tabled in Parliament last week.

Dr Mallia spoke to journalists about the matter after a press conference at Corradino Correctional Facility where he presided over the launch of an EU-funded social integration programme for inmates by the Paola local council.

Asked about his eyebrow-raising declaration of having €500,000 in cash, Dr Mallia said this was a result of him having “disposed of some property” last year.

“That was the position until the end of 2012,” he said.
