A total of 4,600 teenagers will be eligible to vote for the first time in next month’s local council elections. Launching a campaign themed ‘First Time’ at the Junior College in Msida yesterday, Local Councils Minister Owen Bonnici (seen playing a video game with students) encouraged eligible voters to make use of their new right, calling it a “historic step” in Malta’s democratic process. A new law has brought the minimum voting age in local council elections down from 18 to 16. However, under-18s are not allowed to vote in the spring hunting referendum on the same day.
