With years of experience in the field, Maltese reggae act and melodica maestro Mind’s Eye Dub has successfully maintained a steady, albeit relatively low-key presence in the local music scene.

In fact, one could say that, for better or worse, Mind’s Eye Dub is probably better known on the international dub and reggae circuit than here at home.

This is more than likely due to the fact that Mind’s Eye Dub (aka melodica maestro David Magro) is more of a recording artist than a live act, although his legacy stretches back many years. Magro was, in fact, a member of top local reggae band Mind’s Eye, out of which, to some extent, this dub alter ego evolved.

In the 11 or so years since launching Mind’s Eye Dub he has released a clutch of albums, initially via cutting edge music sites MP3.com and Vitaminic, where his music successfully charted thanks to a healthy demand for his infectious blend of melodica-driven dub and a strong melodic vein and, as of 2009, through Maltese net label Dubkey.

Two years on from the success of his A Different World album, Mind’s Eye Dub is back with a new album which, as has been the case with his most recent work, is available as a free download from the Dubkey label website www.dubkey.com.

Partly paying tribute to legendary Jamaican band Black Uhuru (whom Magro cites as a big influence) and partly inspired by the Swahili word for ‘cry for freedom’, Uhuru is a consistent and mature musical statement. Featuring 12 new songs drenched in rich melodies and boasting delicate arrangements, the album maintains Magro’s high standards in terms of creativity, performance and production while reflecting his inquisitive nature in the various sounds he incorporates on the new songs.

Often referred to as reggae music’s own Maltese Falcon, Magro has developed a particular style in his melodica-playing, instilling a Mediterranean feel into his music that plays an essential role in giving Uhuru its appeal.
