Georges Bizet’s Carmen is returning to Spazju Kreattiv. The classic tale of a gypsy woman driven by music and passion is still as irresistible as it was at its original premiere in 1875.

Carmen tells a tragic tale of love and passion against the lively backdrop of 19th-century Seville, Spain.

When the eponymous protagonist enters the scene, no one can resist her flame. In spite of his initial resistance, even the stoic soldier Don José cannot help but fall for her renegade charms.

After helping Carmen escape from jail, José is ready to forgo his responsibilities to chase her to the ends of the earth but nothing can prepare him for her independent spirit.

Originally denounced as an immoral work, this provocative opera infamously won the critical favour of composer Tchaikovsky and philosopher Nietzsche and today enjoys classic status.

The opera will be in Italian with English sub-titles.

The opera is being screened today at 7pm at St James Cavalier, Valletta. For more information and tickets, visit www.kreattivita.org.
