Outgoing Mepa chairman Austin Walker had a basic pay of €94,204.50 and a statutory bonus of €512.46, it was revealed in Parliament yesterday.

He also had the use of a home telephone, a car and fuel, a mobile phone, home internet, two memberships in professional bodies and private hospital cover for himself, his spouse and dependants. The information was given by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat in answer to a question by Chris Agius (PL).

Mepa vice-chairwoman Sandra Mamo had a basic pay of €38,698.79, a statutory bonus of €512.46, a general expense allowance of €8,152 and a non-pensionable allowance of €5,727.60.

She also had a telephone expense allowance of €512.46, a car allowance of €5,654, a petrol allowance of €1,980, a mobile phone allowance up to €815.28, home internet and private hospital cover for herself, her spouse and dependants.

The same benefits were enjoyed by the other Mepa vice-chairman, architect Franco Montesin. Eleven members and independent members each received €3,494.01 a year.

CEO Ian Stafrace, who sat on the board as an observer, had a basic pay of €69,699.76, a statutory bonus of €512.46 and a performance bonus up to 15 per cent of his basic pay.

Allowances included €470 for telephone expenses, €5,000 for a car, €1,980 for petrol, use of a mobile phone, home internet, one membership in a professional body and private hospital cover for himself, his spouse and dependants.

Four directors and the Mepa board secretary also had the same bonuses, allowances and perks as the chair and vice-chair.

The respective basic pay packets were €41,702 for director of corporate services Marlene Attard, €41,905 for director of planning Christopher Borg, €41,944 each for director of environment Petra Bianchi and director of enforcement Alex Borg, and €29,245 for board secretary David Cassar.
