About 20 kilos of cannabis and cocaine were found in a locked vehicle inside the Portomaso car park in St Julian’s on Tuesday, sources said yesterday.

Two men were arraigned yesterday in connection with the haul.

The sources said one of them was about to deliver about seven kilos of cannabis to the other who was reportedly found in possession of a kilo of cocaine.

They were arrested after the police received information about drug dealing and mounted a surveillance operation.

Police pounced when the seven kilos of cannabis were about to be delivered, the sources said.

Sicilian Carmelo Luca, 35, denied conspiring to traffic in cannabis and cocaine, importing cannabis resin, trafficking and being in possession of the drugs in circumstances denoting it was not for his exclusive use.

Malcolm Falzon, 44, from Marsascala, pleaded not guilty to similar charges and to trafficking drugs in May 2006.

Following their arrest, some 20 kilograms of drugs were found in a car parked at the Portomaso car park.

Lawyers Giannella de Marco, Gianluca Caruana Curran and Edward Gatt, appearing for the accused, did not request bail and the men were remanded in custody.
