I am totally perplexed by all the recent strange goings-on in Malta. Odd property deals; Panama hats; Libyan oil being discharged close to Maltese waters; claims regarding the integrity of the press.

The only common denominator is that these complex accusations involve complex male egos. Not a single woman on the radar.

Now in my working life I must say I always found women to be more trustworthy, honest, transparent and protective of reputation. Call me an old sentimentalist if you will.

Once the dust has settled, I hope the Maltese electorate and the political parties make absolutely sure that women are disproportionately represented in Parliament. In that way, stupid and idiotic ‘errors of judgement’ may be avoided.

Good governance is the backbone of all business confidence, and that is being sorely tested now. Unless these messes are now quickly sorted out then we may expect money to move elsewhere, employment prospects to diminish and certain businesses to falter.

So if you have anything to hide, have made a mistake or have jeopardised the Maltese economy in any way, then resign. Get out of the kitchen.

Let more women into the government so that these egotistical mistakes become a thing of distant memory.
