The Art Census Gallery is central London is currently paying homage to the late US photographer Eve Arnold with an exhibition of her most important stories.

All About Eve features over 100 unique photographs, including New York by Night, Harlem Fashion Show, the First Five Minutes in the Life of a Baby, Voodoo in Haiti and Vogue Fashion Shows in 1977.

It also features Arnold’s travel photographs from Afghanistan (late 1960s), China and India (around 1980) and her legendary star portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, Isabella Rossellini, Clark Gable, Peter O’Toole and Anthony Quinn, among others.

Arnold was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Russian immigrant parents. She began photographing in 1946 while working at a photo-finishing plant in New York City and then studied photography in 1948 at the New School for Social Research in New York.

She was the first female photographer to become a full member of the storied Magnum agency in 1957. She was based in the US during the 1950s but went to England in 1962 to put her son through school.

Her most famous shots include portraits of Marilyn Monroe – both vulnerable and glamorous – taken over a decade and collected in her book Marilyn Monroe: An Appreciation.

She also worked in China which led to her first major solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in 1980.

Arnold received many honours and awards.

In 1995 she was made fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and elected Master Photographer – the world’s most prestigious photographic honour.

In 2003 she became an OBE for services to photography.

The exhibition runs until April 27.
