A David Cauchi goal five minutes from time was all Mellieħa needed to secure three important points from their encounter with Siġġiewi to strengthen their grip on second place in the standings.

The northerners were looking to put behind them all the negative effects of their last outing against Gudja which was abandoned at half. Mellieħa were also playing without their top-scorer this season, Thiago Loquete, who is now serving a three-year ban as the club continues to wait impatiently for the MFA disciplinary board decision.

Mellieħa-Siġġiewi was uneventful to say the least with very few scoring opportunities on either side.

Siġġiewi had a greater percentage of possession yet a lapse of concentration in defence cost them dear as they conceded a crucial goal that ultimately earned Mellieħa victory.

The first scoring opportunity fell to Siġġiewi after 20 minutes. Vassallo centred towards Farrugia who dashed past the goalkeeper but lost his balance when he was about to tap the ball home. The Siġġiewi striker was unable to continue after hurting his ankle.

Four minutes from the break, Mellieħa almost found a breakthrough but Borg St John’s clever ball to Magri was intercepted by goalkeeper Vella.

The Northerners missed a sitter soon after the restart when Cauchi sent an inviting ball in the opponents’ box but both Borg St John and Galea failed to make contact from routine distance.

A minute later, a long-range Galea drive skimmed the Siġġiewi woodwork.

Mellieħa hit the winner five minutes from time. A Fenech centre caught the Siġġiewi defence napping, Borg St John nodded the ball into the path of the unmarked Cauchi who beat the keeper from close in.
