Gudja United 2
Melita 2

Melita fought back from two goals down to take a point in a thrilling encounter against Gudja United yesterday.

The point gained lifted Melita on the 19-point mark, level with leaders St Andrew’s.

Gudja made all the running in the first half and took the lead on 24 minutes.

They were awarded a free-kick from which Adrian Carabott’s shot flew past Melita goalkeeper Philip Schranz.

Melita almost drew level four minutes later but Luke Sammut’s curling drive was somehow kept out by Gudja goalkeeper Matthew Xerxen.

Gudja came close to a second goal on 32 minutes when Matthew Groves was released by Carabott and his attempted flick had the better of Schranz but Luke Bianco was on hand to clear off the line.

Melita improved considerably after the break but they struggled to create any danger to the Gudja defence.

In fact it was Gudja who added a second goal on 79 minutes when in a quick break Groves tapped the ball home from an Angelo Catania delivery.

But the Amateurs refused to lie down.

Six minutes from time they pulled a goal back when George Gribbon stabbed home a Terpougoff cross.

A minute later Michael Cachia thought he had drawn his team level but his shot was cleared off the line.

But Melita were not to be denied as a minute from time Rudi Alinho rose above his marker to head the ball home from a corner.
