Melita Mobile has been assigned frequencies within the 900MHz spectrum following a public call for applications by the Malta Communications Authority, the telecoms group said.

Melita said these frequencies, along with other planned investment, would enable it to further improve its indoor coverage capacity.

The 900MHz spectrum is traditionally used by GSM mobile operators and in Malta it was used exclusively by the incumbent operators.

Chief executive officer Andrei Torriani said the assignment of spectrum within the 900MHz band would put Melita Mobile on a level playing field with its competitors.

The new frequencies reach deeper into buildings, particularly properties with very thick walls or in densely developed areas.

Recent statistics published by the regulator showed that by the end of last year, Melita Mobile accounted for almost 16 per cent of all mobile calls made by customers, up from a share of around eight per cent of outgoing minutes in the same period in 2009.
