The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority has ordered Melita plc to amend one of its newspaper adverts, after it was deemed to be misleading.
The advert, which was related to an offer for Melita Sports, was found to contravene Articles 51C and D of the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority Act.
The authority advised Melita to increase the font size of the last two sentences of the advert, which stipulate the price of the new service, the date the offer ends, and the terms and conditions, so as to make them more legible.
Furthermore, the company was requested to indicate in the advert that the consumer would be entering into a new agreement with Melita and would be required to renew their current contract, for a minimum period of two years.
If Melita failed to comply, the authority said it reserved the right to take further action against the company, as specified in the Consumer Affairs Act.
This is the second time the authority has moved against a major telecoms provider over advertising. Last month it ordered Go to amend print adverts on its sports package, part of which constituted “deceptive advertising”, as well as billboards and TV and radio spots.
The company said it complied immediately with the authority’s advice.
