The fight for Premier League survival resumes today with two Relegation Pool matches at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.
The second match in programme, starting at 8.15pm, is a relegation six-pointer as only two points separate Ħamrun Spartans from bottom club Melita.
Ħamrun went down 3-0 to Floriana in their last outing before the international break.
Defender Adrian Borg must serve the second of a two-match ban but otherwise the Spartans coach Stefan Sultana has no selection problems.
Melita will be without defender George Gribbon, suspended.
Spanish coach Patxi Salinas is likely to keep faith with young goalkeeper Philip Schranz after his reassuring performance in the 2-2 draw with Rabat Ajax.
The head-to-head record between Melita and Ħamrun is even as the Spartans won the first-round match 3-1 but the Amateurs prevailed 1-0 in the second round.
In today’s first game (kick-off 6pm), second-bottom Rabat will be bidding to steal a march on Ħamrun and Melita when they take on Balzan.
The Magpies produced a spirited fightback to recover from two goals down in a 2-2 draw with Melita in their last outing.
Today, coach Silvio Vella is not expected to make many changes from the team that started the Melita game.
However, striker Malcolm Licari, who added some much-needed punch to Rabat’s attack after coming on as a second-half substitute against Melita, is not likely to start as he’s still not 100 per cent fit.
Balzan are not yet mathema-tically safe but they are 10 points clear of the drop zone, meaning that a win this evening would all but seal their status for yet another season.
Brazilian utility player Renato Conceicao is suspended for Balzan after a fourth yellow card in the 4-4 draw with Qormi.
Balzan beat Rabat 2-0 in the first round but the second league meeting between these two teams ended one-all.
