No cases were filed with the Malta Mediation Centre since it was set up more than eight years ago.

Addressing a seminar on the EU Mediation Directive, centre chairman Michael Tanti Dougall said that, despite efforts to promote mediation in legal disputes, not a single application had been received.

Mediation involves the appointing of an independent body during legal disputes in the hope of avoiding legal proceedings in court.

Dr Tanti Dougall acknowledged that convincing older generations that the service was a viable alternative would be no easy task.

He said the centre was working with the education authorities to introduce conflict management skills at a primary level.
