Knights in shining armour, flashing swords, birds of prey and jousting tournaments transformed the silent city of Mdina into a bustling mediaeval city for a two-day festival over the weekend.

Thousands of Maltese and tourists took advantage of the fine weather to enjoy sights from the past in Malta’s former capital city.

Decorated with festoons, the streets came alive to mediaeval football competitions and human chess challenges. Demonstrations of the use of mediaeval weaponry captivated visitors’ attention and they were also entertained by folk bands and choirs whose music filled the streets adding to the atmosphere.

It was a feast for all the senses, as mediaeval food could also be tasted together with an abundance of wine.

Organised by the Mdina local council and the tourism authority, the festival is in its third year with an estimated 37,000 people visiting it last year.
