Leading glassware producer Mdina Glass recently received the “Ġieħ l-Artiġġjanat Malti” prize during an awards ceremony presided over by the Minister for Fair Competition, Small Business and Consumers, Jason Azzopardi.

At the end of the day we are artisans and every piece of glassware we sell is a unique creation brought to life by our craftsmen

Mdina Glass won this year’s award on the strength of the design and production of a glass installation placed in a private garden, and composed of two sculptures, one being a fountain and the other representing the decorative vegetation surrounding it.

The fountain is made of over 1,600 glass spirals bringing together a blend of transparent and matt glass varieties, the colours of which – mainly shades of blue, green and brown - are meant to enhance the beauty of the garden while subtly merging with its natural environment. The second part of the sculpture, which was placed on a rock featuring various species of cacti, is also composed of spirals and features a design which complements this type of vegetation.

Mdina Glass production and product design manager Olivia Said stated that the company was very proud of this national recognition for the creativity and skills of its artisans: “Although Mdina Glass has grown and expanded its operations substantially since its inception in the late 1960s, both locally and overseas, at the end of the day we are still artisans, and every piece of glassware we sell is a unique creation brought to life by our craftsmen”.

Ms Said added that “the garden fountain installation with which we have won this award marks a first for Mdina Glass, as we are now also catering for outdoor functional glass decorations”.
