Students reading for a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in 3D Design and Interiors at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology’s Institute of Art and Design were recently challenged to design innovative eco-friendly, home products out of waste material normally discarded by Domestica Ltd’s woodwork factory. The project formed part of a course module on sustainable design and was developed by the institute in collaboration with the company, one of Malta’s leading furniture makers and retailers.
Domestica supported the students by providing professional advice and the required materials, which included sawdust, aluminium, rubber strips and wooden off-cuts. The students used the materials to create various products, including modular furnishings, chairs, children’s furniture and disposable picnic-ware.
The project was concluded on April 19 with the inauguration of an exhibition of these innovative prototypes at the Domestica Ltd showroom in Msida. A panel of design professionals also selected the designs by students Maria Bezzina, Shaun Fenech and Emma Hickey as the best solutions to the project’s design brief.
The exhibition remains open tomorrow and Tuesday from 9am to 7pm.
