In the March 31 issue of The Sunday Times of Malta my letter regarding the origins of the name Hamis ix-Xirka (Maundy Thursday) was published, suggesting that the original term was Hamis iċ-Ċirka.

Since then, I received a phone call from Doreen Micallef of Naxxar through which she supplid me with information regarding the term.

She stated that her mother, the late Ċensina Sciberras who hailed from Naxxar and who was born in 1905 used to say Ħamis in Ċirka with reference to the liturgical commemoration of Holy or Maundy Thursday.

This is at least a proof that the term Ħamis iċ-Ċirka was in fact the original term in use in our islands with reference to the day preceding Good Friday. I would like to thank Mrs Micallef for being kind enough to communicate the information.
