Leaders Krishna CC were looking to seal the Winter League title last week in their match against Marsa at the oval.

However, their plans were dashed as Marsa claimed the spoils and now they must wait for the outcome of Melita’s next match to know their fate.

Krishna batted first and were off to a flying start with Puneet Gupta making 22 runs which included five fours. Andy Mitchell batted well and retired after 40 balls with a score of 30.

A couple of quick wickets fell and Krishna were suddenly in trouble before John Rusher joined John Grima at the crease. Both produced an impressive partnership to lift their team’s hopes.

Rusher made 17 runs while Grima retired making 37.

Tony Slater added eight runs and Andy Lenard 18. With extras, Krishna made what was thought to be a healthy score of 165 runs.

For Marsa, Tony Azzopardi took two wickets and George Agius one.

In reply, Ronnie Sacco opened up with a barrage of shots, one of which went over the long off boundary. He was finally dismissed by Lenard who had to run and dive to take the catch.

Sacco made 40 runs off 29 balls which included four fours and two sixes.

Krishna saw hope when Marsa lost a couple of wickets in succession but Derek Ali joined Frank Spiteri and together they took the game away from their opponents.

Spiteri collected 33 runs from 25 balls while powerhouse Ali retired making 65 runs including seven fours and three sixes.

Lenard came on to bowl and claimed three wickets but Marsa still made the runs needed comfortably.

Lenard ended with four wickets while Mike Caruana took two.

Marsa play Melita next.

Melita are still in contention for the title and need to earn 11 points to leapfrog Krishna at the top of the standings.
