Stockport Grammar School (SGS) started their 12th tour of the islands enjoying a reasonable good record against host team Marsa.

Prior to this latest visit, SGS had figured in 33 games against the locals and won 19 of them.

As series wins goes, Stockport have six to show, one better off than Marsa as the years between 2005 and 2008 were their strongest having chalked up four in a row, the best so far.

The first game from the 2012 series was played last Thursday and the home team made their intentions clear as they amassed a healthy 174 runs from 20 overs.

At the half-way mark, they only had 45 runs on the board. But after a very scratchy start, Frank Spiteri lived up to his billing as the country’s best batsman and top-scored with 72 runs from 52 balls which included seven fours and a six.

Dhruv Duggal added 50 runs from just 24 balls as Ronnie Sacco chipped in with 20 from 11 runs towards the end of the innings.

The Marsa innings were aided with 21 extras.

For SGS, A. Jones and M. Proctor were the main wicket-takers with two each.

In reply, the visitors could only muster 124 runs. M. Cox was their best points-getter with 35 as M. Schofield managed 21 and M. Murphy 19.

The wicket-takers for the home team were Duggal, two, Ronnie Sacco and Joy Ghoseroy, one each. The pick of the bowlers was Dave Borg with three.

The second game from the series was played on Saturday.

SGS batted first this time and only managed 159 runs from 40 overs.

Their top scorer was C. Marshall with 33 runs as Schofield had 30, Cox 20 and Murphy 20.

The wickets were spread among Andy Naudi (two), Nowell Khosla, Duggal, Kevin Krishna, Tony Slater and Sarfraz Ali (all one).

Marsa reached their target by the end of the 36th over.

Early on, John Rusher did well to hold one end so that partner Khosla could go on to chalk up 46 runs.

Sunny Krishna did a superb job in his 55 runs while John Grima (19) and Duggal (18) saw the home team through for victory. Jones again impressed with the ball for SGS, taking three wickets.

Marsa took a 2-0 lead in the four-game series.
