The number of Church marriages in 2013 totalled 1,319, of which 1,136 involved Maltese nationals, the Curia said yesterday.

Of the 62 marriages between Maltese and foreigners, 32 of the couples were Catholics, 19 were Maltese Catholics and non-Catholic Christians, and 11 were Maltese Catholics and non-Christians. Twelve marriages also took place between Maltese nationals who live abroad as well as 109 between foreign nationals.

The foreigners who married Maltese nationals in 2013, 42 men and 20 women, came from 29 different countries, including Italy (13) the UK (7). The most popular months for Church weddings were May, June and July, while those who got married were aged mainly between 20 and 29.

Sixty-four marriages last year were convalidated, which means that couples who had not married in the Church later chose to do so. Thirty-two people whose first marriage had been annulled also tied the knot last year.
