I refer to the item that appeared in the On the Dot column titled ‘Such a disgrace’ (June 8).

The cleaning after the Sunday market at Marsaxlokk is done by the Cleansing Directorate staff within the Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure. Cleansing work starts at 7pm after the dismantling of the market stalls between 6 and 7pm.

The situation depicted in the photo carried in the column is a reality of what the Cleansing Directorate employees find after the Sunday market.

When cleansing operations used to start at 6pm, quite a large number of market stalls used to be still in place and the employees had to wait to commence cleansing works. Since cleansing operations are commencing at 7pm, better cleaning is being done once all the market stalls are dismantled and the site is ready within an hour.

Cleansing works consist in street sweeping, collection of refuse and high pressure washing.
