A group of people with disabilities, as well as individuals representing voluntary groups, came together yesterday to march in Valletta to raise awareness about their human rights.

Wearing white caps and matching T-shirts, participants held up banners calling for equal opportunities and an end to discrimination as they walked to St George’s Square in Valletta accompanied by the beat of a band of drummers.

Organised by the National Commission for People with a Disability, the event was funded by Progress, the EU’s employment and social solidarity programme which focuses on improving gender equality, working conditions and non-discrimination.

Alternattiva Demokratika was among those that lent its support to the walk. AD spokesman for disability issues Claire Azzopardi Lane pointed out that the rights of people with disability were fundamental.
