Women’s open water swimming champion Davina Mangion marked her comeback to the sport in winning fashion, beating current leader Saho Harada in the 2012 Power Bar Open Water Championship race held recently.

Edward Caruana Dingli extended his positive streak to maintain his unbeaten run in the men’s championship.

The third race from the series, organised by Birkirkara St Joseph Sports Club under the auspices of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta, took place at St Paul’s Bay.

In all, 137 swimmers have taken part in these championships so far.

Caruana Dingli was again unchallenged in the four 500-metre laps, finishing in a time of 25 minutes 11 seconds, a personal best assisted by the perfect race conditions.

Under-14 swimmer Thomas Wareing was second in 29:01 ahead of 2011 series winner Robert Demicoli who finished one second slower.

Five other swimmers – Simon Zammit, David Agius Lia, Robert Vella, Wayne Agius and Kyle Buhagiar – all managed to stop the clock under 30 minutes.

Returning from her studies in the United Kingdom, Mangion made a stunning return, cruising to victory in 27 minutes, 12 seconds.

Harada swam the two-kilometre distance in 28:58, ahead of Hannah Pace 29:52.

The fourth race from the series will be held on July 18.
