A man who admitted he was a heavy cannabis user and smoked up to 25 joints a day was yesterday jailed for 15 months.

David Borg, 41, from Mġarr, who works as a panel beater and sprayer, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis that was found in circumstances denoting it was not for his personal use.

He also pleaded guilty to cocaine possession on and before November 2013 and to having a weapon and a substantial amount of ammunition without a police licence.

Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras noted that Mr Borg was a heavy cannabis user and consumed a large number of joints every day, which he considered to be his cigarettes. He told the court he had been dependent on cannabis for the past 20 years.

Noting the accused had a clean police record, she said the total amount of drugs found in his possession was almost 230 grams, which was not an insignificant amount.

Magistrate Galea Sciberras jailed him for 15 months, fined him €1,200 and also recommended that the prison authorities help Mr Borg kick the habit.
