An inebriated man who was barred from boarding a bendy bus was yesterday given a suspended sentence after he admitted to smashing the vehicle’s windscreen and damaging its wipers in a rage.

Farhan Farah Ali tried to board the 6.45pm bus from Birżebbuġa on Tuesday but was stopped by driver Horace Stafrace because of his state of drunkenness, the court heard.

The 20-year-old Somali flew into a rage and smashed the windscreen and bent the wipers, causing €2,909 worth of damage.

Mr Ali pleaded guilty to causing the damage, assaulting Mr Stafrace, being drunk to the point that he could not take care of himself and breaching the peace.

Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit handed down a two-year jail term suspended for four years and ordered him to pay for the damage caused within six months.
